Kometen is one of the longest running restaurants in the city and is worth a visit, if only to be immersed in its rich history. The restaurant, as Kometan, began as an endeavor of Austrian musician, Hans Breitneder, to create a convenient meal option for those in the area without kitchens. The goal was to give them the sam in home as someone with a kitchen dining experience by delivering the restaurant’s food on white tablecloths directly to their homes.
Business was not what he had hoped for. This did not stop Hans however, after four years of business he opened his doors to the public and was well on his way to becoming a staple of life in Göteborg that Kometen is now.
The restaurant was happily run by the original players in the business and their family from 1934 to 2009 when some star restaurateurs took over. They handed the reins to some new high profile proprietors in 2017. However, with each change in ownership, Kometen has maintained its old world charm and consistently delicious menu.
They serve lunch and dinner, as well as being open to large parties in the ballroom. When renting the ballroom, you have several menu options with three courses each. For smaller groups you can choose from the regular menu that features elegantly prepared classic Swedish cuisine.
Lunch is a reasonably priced way to enjoy the history and flavors of Kometen as well. It comes with salad, fresh baked bread, and homemade cakes.
