Bakfickan is one of several restaurants located inside Sweden’s storied and historic opera house in central Stockholm’s Norrmalm district. Less costly and more casual than the other venues, Bakfickan specializes in traditional Swedish dishes in an elegant, intimate setting.
The décor of Bakfickan is modern but with a traditional feel, providing the space with an upscale yet comfortable atmosphere. The venue is very small, however, with seating for only 28, mostly at the U-shaped central dining bar which occupies most of the interior, but even at that, the restaurant does not book tables – it is first come, first served.
Chef Stefano Catenacci has been the head of kitchen operations for the opera house’s restaurants for more than 20 years and is responsible for the delicious, classic recipes and beautiful presentation of meals at Bakfickan. Some of his most popular traditional options include Swedish meatballs, Wallenbergare, Isterband, and steak tartare, while choices such as pork schnitzel, deer brisket, duck breast and oxkind are available as well.
The opera house cellars have a tremendous collection of beers, wines, ciders and spirits to choose from; enough that you can easily pair any food choice you make or simply come by one of the venues to enjoy a drink with friends.
Bakfickan offers an enjoyable dining experience in an exclusive, elegant locale at a fairly reasonable price – many of the main and classic dinner dishes are under 300 and all are under 400. It may be a price that is well worth it!
